Nothing is more important to us at Dreamy Electrics than the safety of your electrics. There are two main forms of electrical safety test – PAT and EICR. The difference is as follows:
Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)
An EICR is a report on the condition of the fixed electrical systems in a property, i.e. the wiring, consumer unit, sockets, light fittings, and permanent appliances such as electric showers.
Portable Appliance Test (PAT)
A PAT test is an assessment of the safety of a portable electrical appliance, such as a lamp or toaster, or larger devices such as a computer or TV.
Portable Appliance Testing or ‘PAT’ testing is required by most workplaces and organisations for health and safety and insurance reasons. A PAT certificate confirms that an appliance is in good working order and safe to use.
Typically we would PAT test multiple devices at a time to make the process more efficient and cost effective. If the appliances pass, we will issue certificates that are valid for 2-4 years depending on the device.
Landlords are legally obliged to ensure the electrical systems in a rental property are in good, safe condition, and this is achieved through having an up to date EICR certificate.
While a valid EICR is a requirement for anyone letting a property in Scotland, it is good practice for homeowners in general to ensure their electrical systems are regularly inspected. This reduces the risk of anything going wrong, and ensures that home insurance will be valid in the event of an electrical problem.
