Speed
A charging point is wired to the mains supply, separately from the rest of the home. As a result it is able to draw a much larger current than a standard socket.
This means the time it takes to recharge a car battery is greatly reduced – from 36 hours to 12 hours, or even less, depending on the size of the car. This means you can charge your car overnight and have it be always ready to go by morning.
Convenience
A charging point can also be fitted to a convenient location, for example on your driveway or in your garage, enabling you to simply park and plug in, without trailing extension cords around the place.
Safety
Even though they work, standard domestic sockets were never designed to handle charging something as large as a car battery. Connecting a car to the general household supply risks overloading the system when appliances like ovens, washing machines etc are being used at the same time.
A car charging point is wired separately from the rest of the house, and has beefed-up insulation, its own circuit breaker and grounding to make it safe.
